Fear and Loathing in Tucson, AZ

I’m surprised this title hasn’t been used a hundred times already.  I’m referring to the recent shooting of a U.S. Congresswoman and the deaths of a 9-year-old girl and a judge, among others.

My aunt lives in Tucson, has for many many decades.  She’s a religious person.  It’s a nice place.

My first reaction to the shootings were “…idiots, idiots, idiots.  STOOOPID.  Violence will NOT accomplish anything…”  (I know, pretty deep thinking.)

I have been worried, and have said before, that with the huge swing to government intervention in our lives accompanying the Obama administration policies the risk is that the lunatic fringe will come out of the woodwork, shooting first and asking no questions later.  They are idiots, and stooopid.

‘So far’ this shooting does not appear to be associated with any semi-coherent fringe of any kind.  Still, I fear the event will incur even more government intervention in our lives.  “No more free speech, you’ll upset a lunatic!”

The Wall Street Journal has a very cogent article on this subject in today’s edition: Murder in Tucson .  I highly recommend it.

We mustn’t let these events succeed in stifling our individual rights.  Somehow, and I don’t know how, these lunatics must be rendered harmless before they do harm.  Virtually taping our mouths shut is not the answer.
