Monday 20 April 2015.  Second day of biking.  We bike from Alkmaar south and stop at the Hortus Bulborum tulip bulb museum in Limmen.   Then we bike west toward the sea and have lunch at Johanna’s Hof in Bakkum.  From there it is south and west into the grass-covered sand dunes along the coast.  We arrive in Wijk aan Zee for a look at the beach and later bike east to Beverwijk.  We meet the barge here and motor into Haarlem to the south for our night’s stay.

The Hortus Bulborum is a tulip bulb museum of which the oldest preserved strain is from the 16th century.  We have a lengthy, informative guided tour here and get a taste of what is to come at the Keukenhof Gardens.

MUCH MORE.

We bike to Johanna’s Hof restaurant (Dutch website) for lunch.    (We have our priorities.) This place is a good start or stopping point for biking the paved paths in the dunes.

From Johanna’s we bike into the grass-covered dunes and pass some monstrous Highlands cattle, which we find are on BOTH sides of the fence!  Needless to say they are outstanding in their field!  🙂

MORE!

South through the dunes we go to Wijk aan Zee.  There we spend time strolling the beach and having refreshments.

MORE.

Eventually we are back on our bikes and off to meet the barge at Beverwijk where it will take us ‘barging’ into Haarlem.

Today’s ride was 21 miles and about 2,000kCal.  Just don’t call me late for dinner:

After dinner our guide takes us on a stroll through Haarlem.

Tomorrow we are off to the world famous Keukenhof Gardens.
