Lens-Artists Challenge #49 – Favorite Things

The challenge this week is led by Patti.

Food for thought.  What ARE my favorite things?  Right off the top of my head, not necessarily in order:  Music (rock, folk, GUITAR).  Mountains (NATURE!).  Cities (that’s where the PEOPLE are).  Traveling (to see mountains, cities, and that we are all fundamentally alike: work, food on the table, home, family).  Architecture (oh that creative psyche that is Man… and Woman).  Reading, and reading history.  (We are doomed to repeat it, regardless, I observe.)

That should get me started.

The easiest first, I suppose.  Reading history.  I’ve read and summarized over ten years’ publication of Lapham’s Quarterly, which says of itself:

“Lapham’s Quarterly embodies the belief that history is the root of all education, scientific and literary as well as political and economic. Each issue addresses a topic of current interest and concern—war, religion, money, medicine, nature, crime—by bringing up to the microphone of the present the advice and counsel of the past.”

My online summaries are listed here.  Tons of free content is available here.  If you read even a scrap of L.Q., I personally guarantee you will be a better person.

I think reading history, or L.Q. at least, is definitely one of my favorite things.

Architecture, traveling, and cities might all be combined with pictures of buildings.  (I’m the first to say photographers take photos, I take pictures.  Sometimes they even resemble a photo. 🙂 )

Scenes from four different cities.  No, one is not Amsterdam, but you’re in the right country.

Mountains, and the great outdoors.  Verrrry big on the favorites list.  I’m forever, within this lifetime at least, in awe.

Did you see those ski runs?  Skiing is a huge favorite too, though I cutting back, way back, in my seniority.

Ooh, I almost forgot museums, and puppies of all ages.  You who cannot like this dog are banished!  Banished I say!!  Sadly, she passed away a few years ago, but is not forgotten.

Museums, another time.  Music, too.  Love it, love it.  …These are a few of my favorite things.

Enjoy.

You are a man of many interests John – and many talents as well I’d assume. I hope others take the time to click on your images, which are very small in the reader. They beautiful. And I always enjoy your summaries of Lapham’s (altho I doubt I’d have the patience to read the real thing!)

  2. ralietravels says:

You are too modest; you make great photos. I too usually just read your summaries of Lapham’s but have occasionally been inspired by you to click on an article to read the item for myself.

  3. cindy knoke says:

She is a true adogable beauty. Your captures are beautiful John and your interests wonderful! Blog on……

  4. I agree ‘banished’ John if you don’t like that gorgeous little dog or any other dogs.

  5. pattimoed says:

Well, John, we have many of the same interests, including dogs and history. 🙂 And who couldn’t love that adorable dog of yours? I am also excited about Lapham’s. It looks wonderful. Now, you’ve given me a wonderful historical resource. Many thanks! 🙂 🙂

  6. Amy says:

Great photos, John! I can relate to some of your favorite thing. We used to ski in Colorado. 🙂

    • JohnRH says:

Ha ha. I have ski stories like fishermen have fish stories. My favorite t-shirt has a picture of a skier and says ‘My life is going downhill’. Woo hooo!

  7. Cee Neuner says:

    What a delightful post. 😀

  8. Leya says:

So many great views and so many interests – I recognize myself in many of them! Maybe except the downhill one…I am going down without skis at least…Love your dog – and we never forget them, do we.

  9. All wonderful photographs of favorite things, John. I’m with you. I enjoy so many things. I had a difficult time selecting just a few. Cute doggie.

  10. An interesting and varied selection for this challenge, John. Nice work!
