The Lens Artists Challenge is hosted this week by Ann-Christine.

She asks: “What is Magical to you? People, places, things, nature, adventures, moments…

For those with acute powers of observation, there is magic everywhere.  That leaves me out, but some of what I find magical are things that are mesmerizing, or hypnotic.  (Thank you Mr. Mesmer, often credited with inventing hypnotism.  But haven’t we been mesmerized by shamans and witch doctors from the beginning of time until now?  I digress.)

At times, who doesn’t stare at earth, air, fire, and water, almost trance-like?  I know I DO!

Let’s have a look.

EARTH, in the form of trees, shrubs, landscape vistas, etc:

AIR, in the form of clouds, and things blown by air.  (Please excuse the flag waving.  It was evidence of air and wind.  It’s an American thing, even among those of us who are proudly unaffiliated with a political party.)

The obligatory sunset. Fleeting, but mesmerizing and magical.

FIRE, in the form of FIRE, and FIREWORKS.  (I did a search in my photo library for fire and it came up with one photo of the moon and about twenty shots of fireworks!  Hmm.)

Autumn is magical. Trees are on fire. Many of us (ME!!) go scrambling about, saying “LOOK! A leaf changed color!!”

WATER, in the form of flowing creeks in the woods.  If it isn’t mesmerizing enough to stare at flowing water, for some reason we photogs try to make the water blurry and silky looking:

“Do you believe in magic in a young girl’s heart
How the music can free her whenever it starts?”
…Do You Believe in Magic
…The Lovin’ Spoonful

“Could this be magic
My dear
My heart’s all aglow
Could this be magic
Loving you so”
…Could Be This Magic
The Dubs (Doo-Wop)

  5. Great collection of photos matching the theme. I can appreciate that we are getting close to the time when many of the trees around the country are “on fire.” I love to watch the Minnesota leaf peepers map that shows on a daily basis the peak fall colors progress from north to south.

I like how you approached the challenge this week, John. Great idea. Your fireworks shot is my favorite. It’s hard to get right, too. I’ve taken dozens of them, and still struggle! Have a wonderful week.

I’m with you on using the power of observation (up high, right in front, or down low) as being the places to find mesmerizing magic. I chuckled at your ‘look – a leaf changed color’ comment. I just said that yesterday morning! I’ve yet to get a photo of water that looks like that. Do you ever share your magical secrets?

Thx. I’ll check. I’m hosting pix on a 2nd WP site to stay ‘cheap’, and linking in post by url. I used to do gallery mode all the time but can’t this way.
