The Lens-Artists Challenge is hosted this week by Amy. Says she:
“Negative space is the area around the main subject of your photograph. This space is empty or unoccupied. Spencer Cox at Photography Life explains,”Photos with high amounts of negative space are: empty, subdued, peaceful, calm, and isolated”.”
Many examples I found in my archives were photography mistakes from incorrect settings, now perhaps considered artful. It reminded me of words of wisdom from the (tongue-in-cheek, keep-your-sense-of-humor) despair.com:
The pictures below are my interpretation of Negative Space. Nothing says N.S. like mist.
This whole series is from a coastal cruise from Anchorage, Alaska to Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Chunks of glacier float in a bay:
The last picture asks that you think of the blockbuster American movie JAWS and the DUH-duh DUH-duh background music as the monster shark approaches. These are orcas, however, only slightly more benign than Great Whites:
I conclude with another of my many mantras of life from despair.com:
Stay safe, be well. Be kind to one another. 😷 👏 👍 Stay positive in your Negative Space!
Kudos to the tireless leaders of the weekly Lens-Artists challenge.
Great selections, John! The mist image is perfect for negative space. The chunks of glacier images are beautifully captured. The last one is really cool! 🙂

I was interested to read the Cox quote about the impact of negative space.
Also, when learning to draw or paint realistically, one learns that is is often easiest to draw negative spaces; the brain wants to assign a “symbol” to an object such as an eye, but if one draws the negative shapes, the eye looks as it really is, not like a symbol of an eye.

Love how one can still make out some glistening blue in the glacier ice, even in the grey, negative space. Must have been a wonderful cruise. 🙂
