Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #116 – Symmetry

[Categories: Photography, Photography 101 Forever]

[Click on a photo to enlarge.]

‘I think’ I’ve allowed some photos to overrun the blog margin, intentionally, for a bigger photo display. Y’all have seen that marginalia forever anyway. Hopefully the photos are not distorted. Let me know.

The Lens-Artists Challenge is hosted this week by Patti.

RE: Vertical symmetry, she says: “If you draw a line down the center of the image, both the left and right side seem to be identical.  Even though the left and right side of the photo aren’t exactly the same, they are similar enough that the image looks balanced and symmetrical.  The eye will linger longer on images that seem in balance.”

Harmony is symmetry, isn’t it, at least to you and me?

“Harmony and me
We’re pretty good company
Looking for an island
In our boat upon the sea
Harmony, gee I really love you
And I want to love you forever
And dream of the never, never, never leaving harmony”

–Harmony by Bernie Taupin and Elton John

Symmetry is:

Wells Cathedral, built in 1176–1450, its Early English front with 300 sculpted figures. This is a print photo I took in Jan. 1989:

The Stadhuis Gouda (City Hall), Gouda, South Holland, Netherlands. Completed in 1450, one of the oldest gothic city halls in the country:

’30 Rock’, Rockefeller Center, NYC, NY:

Köln Cathedral (Cologne), Germany:

The John Hancock Tower in Boston, Massachusetts:

The St. Louis Arch, Gateway to the West, St. Louis, MO:

Lest we forget our place in the universe, I conclude with yet another word of wisdom from the (tongue-in-cheek, keep-your-sense-of-humor) despair.com:

Symmetry is poetry, isn’t it, at least to you and me?

“Poetry in motion
Dancing close to me
A flower of devotion
A swaying gracefully

Whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa”

–sung by Johnny Tillotson

Stay safe, be well, be kind to one another.

… Be in harmony with yourself (‘symmetry’).

  1. A very interesting take on the subject John – loved your different perspectives on the classic architecture, and of course your ending poster. My favorite of these is the St. Louis arch – a perfect example of symmetry.

  2. Hi John,
I enjoyed viewing your selections this week. I took a photo of the St. Louis arch when my daughter lived in Missouri. Your photo is outstanding. Since I wasn’t doing photography at that time My photo isn’t good at all. Thanks for the memory. Have a great day … Be Safe

    1. Thank you. My dad and I rode up the arch around 1996. The transport consists of articulated cars so you’re always level and right side up. The viewing area is somewhat small but not claustrophobic, as I recall. It IS really high!

  3. I love your gothic symmetry, John. I think your St. Louis arch was the most popular with your viewers here. I was there for a conference years ago and had the opportunity to ride to the top. It was like being in a space ship going up. Such a magnificent architectural structure – and so simple. So you went from the simple to the sublime in this post. 🙂
