Per Patti: “Show us portraits or street photography that captures people’s feelings, such as happiness, anger, sadness, curiosity, or fear. Or, choose a subject or scene that evokes an emotion in the viewer.”
I entered ’emotion’ in the search function of my Apple Photo library and came up with… NOTHING. So much for A.I. – artificial intelligence.
Patti uses a photo of Medusa, taken at the Boston Museum of Fine Art. This art, of which there are several copies by the artist Arnold Böcklin, was used on the cover of my literary passion Lapham’s Quarterly Summer 2017: Fear …
One copy of the art was sold by Sotheby’s for 252,000GBP ($342,429.95 at recent exchange rates). There is considerable information on the art at the previous link.
Speaking of Fear and First Inaugurations, I’m reminded of the FDR quote at his first inauguration, apparently paraphrasing Henry David Thoreau, “whose journal entry for September 7, 1851 included the line, “Nothing is so much to be feared as fear.“:
FDR: “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is…fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” (Wiki.) I’m confident we will advance. But I digress.
Cheerleaders! We all need cheerleaders every once in awhile. At a small university’s football game in a very small Iowa town:
Speaking of twins (there are twins in the last photo), such was the topic on the American tv morning show ‘Today’ when we observed in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza. They look a bit serious and business-like!
Perhaps twins can ‘Second that emotion’:
“Oh, but if you feel like lovin’ me
If you got the notion
I second that emotion” –Smoky Robinson and The Miracles
Oh well, when all else fails: ‘Dance like no one is watching!’
(I can tell you, we WERE watching, and young laddie in the middle held his own amongst the fair lassies.)
Stay safe, stay sane, be well, be kind to one another.
HAVE A GREAT 2021.
(By the way, we ARE smiling!!)
Masks make it harder to detect a smile; add sunglasses and it is almost impossible; glad you told us. 😊

It’s hard to be smiling at someone while wearing a mask and not know if they understand that there’s a smile back there. I enjoyed your song connections, John.

Thank you. I frequently joke and smile behind my mask, I just hope they understand!

These days when you talk about what goes on behind people’s masks, it’s not a psychological thing. 🙂

Hi John! This was masterfully creative as you gave us a song snippet – political/literature quotation and an array of emotions depicted in your photos.
The cheerleader one felt classic and timeless – and how cool to see the today show live – we were there once when Janet Jackson was getting set to be interviewed – it was ten plus years ago

Thank you. The Today Show is quite the TV institution. It has been many years since for us also.

That’s one more thing I don’t like about masks… no emotion felt!

Nice collection of images. The cheerleaders are always enthusiastic!
Masks hide the face, but the dark glasses hide the soul. Had we but seen your eyes, we could have better guessed that you were smiling. 🙂

Hi, John. Interesting information on the Medusa sculpture. Definitely out of my price range!! I also like your reference to FDR. Very apt. And thanks for the smile at the end–even behind the mask! Take care and enjoy the day.

A fun and masterful interpretation, John. So Loved the dancers. And smiling behind a mask works out better if you smile hard so that your eyes wrinkle in the corners…doesn’t work if you are too wrinkled or do not have any wrinkles at all… sigh…

Thank you A-C. Any mastery is by chance more than choice. The eyes have it! My wrinkles are always smiling! 🙂

Nice response to this weeks challenge ! I can tell if someone is smiling behind their mask by their eyes. But not if they are wearing dark glasses.

Love your choices. The mask hides your smile and the shades hide your eyes so I can’t tell. Do you have “Green Eyes”, “Angel Eyes” or do you need a “Doctor My Eyes?”

My only gripe for wearing masks … no one can see me smiling.
Your reference to it is perfect. Fun photos you’ve posted for the challenge.
I loved them all … Be Safe 😷 … Isadora 😎

I think the smile they can’t see is showcased through the eyes. Keep smiling … Be Safe … 😷 🙏🏻 😊 Isadora 😎

At least three stories are to be had with the three set of twins, judging by the looks on their faces. 😏
