Lens-Artists Challenge #160 – Your Inspiration

[Categories: Photography, Photography 101 Forever]

RE: PATTI – On Saturday, August 7, Patti is hosting LAPC #160 Your inspiration, which can be a place, a subject, a person, a book–just about anything that inspires you.

Could abstract photos inspire, cleverly modified with Lightroom, Photoshop, Efex, or the like?

Umm, no. These are iPhone shots taken while going through the car wash several weeks ago, cropped but otherwise untouched, though I was ‘inspired’ to sense a photo opportunity.

Clouds could inspire. They are a place where I can always find my head and lose my mind. (Click below to be swept away.)

One of my real inspirations, more of a passion perhaps, is history, most specifically reading it via Lapham’s Quarterly historical journal. Who are we strange humans, why are we, how are we?

I started reading L.Q. with Fall 2011: The Future. I’ve read and back-read every issue (4 per year) since its inception in 2008. A journal of historical extracts, I’ve been inspired to make my own extracts and brief commentary, writing them on my WordPress blog, as if I was rudimentarily coherent and actually had something to say. (I’m the Emperor, I LIKE my new clothes and the sound of my own voice.)

I photograph covers and pages to include with my blog posts:

I assembled into print form the first ten years of my meanderings and found I had a large format, 350 page ‘book’ of sorts. It’s a fool’s errand but it keeps me from running half-naked through the streets, drooling rabidly, and raging against the hypocrisies of existence. Following are…

My posts on Lapham’s Quarterly.

Anyone actually interested in learning from history should bypass my scribbling and go directly to https://www.laphamsquarterly.org, where a massive number of excerpts from all issues are available FREE.

Stay safe, stay well, be inspired.

Oh yes, ‘just one more thing.’ YOU people inspire me. You bloggers with your stunning photography and clever repartee, but that goes without saying, so never mind. (Keep up the good work.)

  1. Terrific response John – loved your first abstract, a photo op indeed! Have read many of your Lapham’s thru the years John and know how much you love it. Always interesting, this time I really enjoyed the quotes you chose, especially Groucho! Will there ever be another like him? I think not.

  2. Oh, this is wonderful, John. Clouds and history and the car wash! I love your link to Lapham’s and found some great articles already to bookmark. I’m doing research for a historical novel about Father Coughlin and the rise of nationalism in the 1930’s and 1940’s, so this is perfect!! A great response to the challenge, John.

  3. I love this – such a variety of sources of inspiration, from car washes via clouds to historical accounts! And I also like the way you acknowledge the inspiration you get from fellow bloggers, something we should all remember to do from time to time. Finally, that Groucho Marx quote is a classic 🙂
