LENS-ARTISTS CHALLENGE #169 – The ordinary

I.J. leads this week. The ordinary from a different point of view?

In my humble opinion it doesn’t get more ORDINARY than an ATTIC. How many photos of attics has anyone on Lens-Artists posted in the last year or two? FEW if any I say, not because they are unusual, but because they are too ORDINARY, mundane, blasé, banal.

I was in my attic recently, and it looked like THIS:

Dusty, dirty, uninhabitable place. It’s somewhere I don’t go too often, as it requires a ladder to start with. Why was I there? After a recent hail storm our condo association advised us to check for roof leaks, because, though the association is responsible for external roof damage, the condo owners are responsible for internal damage, such as from water, even though it was caused by external damage. Gotta’ love it. (TMI? Are you asleep yet? ORDINARY.)

I did not spot any leaks, but I did see a HOLE IN THE ROOF!

It appears to have roofing material over it on the outside and it’s possibly left from original construction, a poor choice of venting outlet that they didn’t use but failed to patch. Association responsibility none the less and they are in progress to repair it. Bored to tears yet? ORDINARY!

Did I mention that my furnace is in the attic. Not ORDINARY, so I’m not going to go there.

Stay well, stay safe.

  1. Hi John. The older I get, the more I appreciate the ordinary, the more I enjoy a good dull time. Seriously. You’re fortunate that your condo association will take care of the roof patch. I wonder if anyone will help this woman who has a meteorite come crashing through hers: https://www.thegoldenstar.net/news/meteor-gives-golden-woman-late-night-shock/ Oh wait, that wasn’t ordinary was it. I like your attic photos and commentary. A+ in ordinary. They don’t make attics like they used to. Best, Babsje

    1. Yes. Don’t get me started on Colorado condo laws, such as, if my neighbor accidentally damages my property he doesn’t have to pay for it. Designed to ‘reduce litigation’. Like legalizing murder in order to reduce litigation.

  2. A furnace in the attic?? Extraordinary! I never heard of that before. Your post is a lot of fun. I hope the hole is repaired soon. It’s a good thing that it’s a condo expense. A silver lining. 😀😀

  3. We helped run a cable TV installation business in Florida. You attic, indeed, would be quite ordinary there. What was not ordinary was the temperatures in those attics in the summer. On the other hand, the Civil War era farmhouse I spent my teenage years in had a real open attic with a huge walk-in cedar-lined closet where winter clothing could be stored in the summer. I was wondering recently if it still exists.

  4. I’ve never had an attic, I’ve never been in an attic and I’ve never seen inside a real attic, so NOT ORDINARY. Thanks for sharing John 😃

  5. I’m impressed at how empty your attic is. Ours (we call it a loft) is full of clutter – old tins of paint, wood from discarded furniture – things that are ‘sure to come in useful one day’ but never have!

  6. Our house has an attic we can access through crawling only… dusty and filled with insulation. Not possible to store things there. My grandmother had a splendid attic. A trapdoor too. There she stored carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, for the winter. It was a lovely place for a little child like me to climb up there – a place filled with treasures.
    Ordinary, but great!

  7. Can’t walk around there, can you? In our Cleveland house, we had an attic that had a plywood floor in most of it, so it was great for storage (or bad because it was easy to just store things there.) Now we have some sort of little place above the garage but I’ve never been up there.
