Following is the Great Sand Dunes National Park, photo taken from the Zapata Falls trailhead about eight miles away.

I was facing north to take this picture. What part of the day was it?
Stay safe, be well, be kind to one another.
Morning?

Good example of shade and light.
My guess is between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm.

Thank you 🙏. Specifically 8:36am, but morning has pronounced shadows on left/west sides of dunes because sun rising low in the east. Midday has few if any shadows as sun is overhead.

Facing north, dunes left to right, west to east. Shadows on left/west sides, so sun low in the east, morning. No shadows midday, sun overhead.

Morning. Sun east, shadows west sides.

I’m missing something John. The shadows seem to be on the right side of each dune, the right side. But then I looked just now and realized it was one of those situations where you had to look closely to see where the high points of the dunes were.

As well as high points, the dunes have crests or ridge lines. The shadows are on the left sides of the ridge lines, thus the sun is coming from the right, or the east (since I’m facing north to take the picture). The photo exif data verifies that it was taken at 8:36am. The date was October 2, so the sun is rising more southerly that time of year. I’ll check a map and see if I can determine more accurately the northerly orientation of the photo.

Yes, the dunes are more or less due north of Zapata Falls. The ridge lines on the left of the photo appear to run slightly north-westerly, others, not so much. Sun from the east creates shadows on the west sides.

Such a peaceful landscape…morning time? the shadows are still so eminent.

Wow, great image, John. You were facing north, sun was in the east, so it was morning. 🙂

I see everyone else has already replied ‘morning’ which was exactly what I was going to say – and fairly early judging by the length of the shadows, although of course that will depend on the time of year, which you didn’t give us. I guess you didn’t want to make this too easy 😆

Great early morning photo! We visited there for the first time in 2019. It’s a fascinating place that we’d like to revisit. The dunes are much bigger than they seem. Did you walk to Zapata Falls? It was too far for us.

Thank you. We walked nearly all the way but the stream and falls were a trickle so we skipped wading the rest. It was early October.
